Luigi Vanvitelli (1700–1773) is best known for a series of major works that define the landscapes of various Italian cities - foremost among them Caserta, with its spectacular Royal Palace and the imposing Carolino Aqueduct. An architect and painter, he is considered one of the leading figures of the Rococo and Neoclassical periods. This concise text - written by his nephew and namesake - offers an effective early portrait of the artist, outlining his biography while naturally focusing on the characteristics of his major works. Although passed over in the Roman competitions for the Trevi Fountain and the Basilica of Saint John Lateran, Vanvitelli’s artistic flair was quickly recognized, and he soon rose to fame. He worked in Ancona and Rome before entering the service of Charles of Bourbon in the mid-18th century; for the monarch, he created - among other projects - the magnificent Royal Palace of Caserta.
